There’s a moment in Pahalgam that happens to almost everyone. You’re walking along the Lidder River, the water is so clear you can see every stone on the riverbed, pine trees are rising up the hillside on both sides, and somewhere behind you the noise of ordinary life has completely stopped. You look around and realise you haven’t thought about your phone in two hours.

That’s what Pahalgam does. And it does it quietly, without trying.

Sitting at 2,130 metres in the Anantnag district, 95 kilometres southeast of Srinagar, Pahalgam is the Kashmir that people who’ve already seen Dal Lake come looking for next. Less visited than Gulmarg, less talked about than Srinagar, but quietly the valley that stays with you longest. The air is cooler here, the pace slower, the landscape more raw. Pine forests climb the hillsides above town. The Lidder River runs cold and fast through the centre, fed by snowmelt from the mountains above. In the meadows beyond town, shepherds still move their flocks between summer and winter pastures the way they have for centuries.

The Betaab Valley, named after the 1983 Bollywood film shot here, is the most visited spot near Pahalgam and the one most first-time visitors see first. It earns the attention — a wide green meadow flanked by snow-dusted peaks, with the Lidder running through the middle and wildflowers covering the ground in summer. Go in the morning before the day-trippers arrive from Srinagar and it feels like you have the whole valley to yourself.

Baisaran meadow, a short pony ride above town, is Pahalgam’s most loved secret. At 2,400 metres, surrounded by dense fir forests with the peaks of the Pir Panjal range in the distance, it’s the kind of landscape that makes people stop mid-conversation. There are no roads here — you go by pony or on foot — and that small inconvenience keeps it exactly as it should be. Quiet. Green. Completely worth the climb.

The Aru Valley, 12 kilometres from Pahalgam along a road that follows the Aru stream through meadows and small villages, is where the landscape opens up into something more dramatic. Wooden houses with stacked firewood on their verandas. Women weaving outside in the afternoon light. Horses grazing in fields with peaks rising behind them. Aru is the kind of place where an afternoon walk turns into three hours without you noticing. It’s also the starting point for treks to Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar Marsar lake — but even if you’re not trekking, the valley itself is the destination.

The Chandanwari meadow, 16 kilometres from Pahalgam at 2,895 metres, is where the landscape turns properly alpine — wide snowfields in winter and spring, a rope bridge over the Sheshnag River, and views that keep getting better the further you walk. It also serves as the base camp for the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage every July, when tens of thousands of pilgrims pass through on their way to the sacred cave shrine at 3,888 metres. Even if you’re not participating, watching the pilgrimage from Chandanwari is one of the more extraordinary things you can witness in India.

Pahalgam town itself is small and unhurried. The main bazaar has a handful of good local restaurants, craft shops selling Kashmiri woodwork and woolens, and the kind of chai stalls where you sit longer than you planned. Evenings here are cool even in summer — bring a light layer — and the sound of the Lidder River carries through the whole town after dark. It’s the kind of place where you sleep properly.

When is the best time to visit Pahalgam?
Late spring through early autumn — May to October — is the ideal window. June and July bring the meadows to full green and the Lidder River to its most dramatic flow. September and October are quieter, the light is golden, and the crowds have thinned considerably. Winter closes some of the higher roads and meadows but Pahalgam town itself remains accessible and beautifully snow-covered from December through February.

How do I get to Pahalgam from Srinagar?
Pahalgam is 95 kilometres from Srinagar — roughly two to two and a half hours by road depending on traffic. The drive follows the Jhelum River through the heart of the valley, passing saffron fields near Pampore and apple orchards near Bijbehara. It’s a genuinely beautiful journey and worth doing slowly. Is Pahalgam good for families with children?
It’s one of the best destinations in Kashmir for families. The pony rides to Baisaran and Betaab Valley are easy and exciting for children, the town is small and walkable, the air is clean, and the pace is gentle enough that no one feels rushed. The Lidder River running through town gives kids somewhere to explore that doesn’t require any hiking.

Do I need to trek to enjoy Pahalgam?
Not at all. The most loved experiences in Pahalgam — Betaab Valley, Baisaran meadow, the Aru Valley drive, riverside walks in town — require no trekking ability whatsoever. Ponies are available for anyone who wants to reach the meadows without walking. Pahalgam is equally rewarding for someone who simply wants to sit beside a river in the mountains and do nothing in particular.

How many days should I spend in Pahalgam?
Two nights gives you enough time for Betaab Valley, Baisaran meadow, and a proper evening in town. Three nights lets you add the Aru Valley and Chandanwari without rushing anything. If you’re using Pahalgam as a base for day hikes or want a genuinely slow few days in the mountains, four nights is not too many.
